Erik Mannens

Erik Mannens is an experienced project manager at iMinds since 5 years where he has successfully managed +20 projects. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science Engineering (2011) at UGent, his Master’s degree in Computer Science (1995) at K.U. Leuven University, and his Master’s degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering (1992) at KAHO Ghent. Before joining iMinds -MMLab in 2005 as project manager, he was a software engineering consultant and Java architect for over a decade. His major expertise is centered around metadata modeling, semantic web technologies, broadcasting workflows, iDTV and web development in general. He is involved in several projects as senior researcher and just finished up his PhD on Semantic News Production; he is co-chair of the W3C Media Fragments Working Group and actively participating in other W3C’s semantic web standardization activities (Media Annotations, Provenance, and eGovernment). He recently co-founded the Belgian chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation. On all of these subjects he has published several papers and book chapters. He is also member of the technical committee of MTAP, ACM Multimedia, MareSO, CCNC, and SAMT. His full curriculum can be found on LinkedIn.

 

Projects

Erik Mannens has been leading several national research projects within the domain of broadcast workflow processes, multimedia adaptation, metadata modelling, and ontology building.

  • DCA (Digitising Contemporary Art): EU project (1 Jan 2011 - 30 Jun 2013). Participating as workpackage leader on the metadata implementation guidelines for digitised contemporary artworks and the recommendation on contextualisation and interlinking digitised contemporary artworks.
  • SMIF (Smart Media In Flanders): iMinds project (1 Oct 2010 - 31 Dec 2012). Participating as workpackage leader on semantic metadata modelling, enrichment, clustering and provenance on news and sports multimedia assets.
  • Archipel (Network-centric approach to sustainable digital archives): iMinds project (1 Oct 2009 - 31 Dec 2011). Participating as overall leader on semantic metadata modelling, aggregating, harvesting, exchanging, and archiving of Flanders valuable multimedia assets.   • Video QSAC (Video To The Home - Quality Sensing, Aggregation & Control): iMinds project (1 Jan 2007 - 31 Dec 2009). Participating as workpackage leader on DRM business modelling and multimedia encoding & bitstream adaptation.
  • MADUF (MAximizing Dvb Usage in Flanders): iMinds project (1 Jan 2006 - 31 Mar 2008). Participating as workpackage leader on deploying interactive services for mobile television using DVB-H.

Standardization

During his work at Multimedia Lab Erik Mannens also joined the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as iMinds -representative and is since then actively participating in standardization processes within W3C. Erik Mannens was a contributing member of the W3C Multimedia Semantics Incubator Group, is currently a participant of the W3C Media Annotations Working Group and is currently co-chair and editor within the W3C Media Fragments Working Group. He's also starting up work in the Provenance WG and eGovernment WG.
